What We Did

Hub Distributing, Inc., owner and operator of the popular Miller’s Outpost chain and Anchor Blue clothing stores, employs approximately 5,000 sales associates and 1,000 store managers in over 15 states. Most sales associates are 16 to 20 years old and work part time; most store managers are 18 to 30 years old and work full time.

Hub has a comprehensive loss prevention program to prevent loss of merchandise resulting from incorrect shipments, internal theft, and shoplifting. HUB wanted Web-based training to teach the loss prevention policies and procedures to managers and sales associates. An online course would solve many problems associated with training a young, geographically dispersed workforce.

The Learning & Performance Solutions (LPS) Group worked closely with the Hub loss prevention team to design a course that was not only informative but would also appeal to their young, hip audience. A stylish Adobe® Flash® interface was designed, complete with:

  • Colorful graphics
  • Interactive video scenarios with real-life examples
  • Sound effects and other audio cues
  • Rollovers to highlight important content
  • Memory checks with explanatory feedback

The interactive scenarios, many of which came from Hub’s surveillance tapes, included What would you do? decision points. When students choose the action they would take next, the scenario continued, illustrating the likely outcome of the selected answer.
