Training Need
What We Did

Shaw Environmental and Infrastructure, Inc. is one of the nation’s largest full-service contractors, providing innovative solutions for environmental and infrastructure projects worldwide. Many of Shaw E&I’s over 6,000 employees and consultants require annual training to retain their Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) certification.

After years of sending trainers around the country to lead the annual safety refresher course at each site, the company decided to deliver the curriculum electronically to reduce travel expenses for trainers and users.

The online curriculum would make it possible for users to renew their OSHA certification at their convenience and from their own computers. It would also allow administrators to track student progress and verify student compliancy with the OSHA requirement.

To create the web-based version of the OSHA curricula, LPS' instructional designers and graphic artists enhanced the existing training materials and worked with Shaw E&I’s subject matter experts to write new modules, create illustrations and animations, and compose case studies and questions with feedback to reinforce learning.

Each module ends with a scored exam with randomized, objectives-based questions that measure what the user has learned. Users can skip questions and return to them later, but must answer all the questions before submitting their exam. Users who score at least 80% pass the exam and receive credit for the module.

The program’s integrated Learning Management System (LMS) automatically tracks user scores and progress, and allows users to bookmark pages and submit questions to instructors. The LMS tracks student scores, progress, and time spent in each module. Administrators use the LMS to assign students to specific courses, check their records, and respond to questions.

The dynamic nature of government safety regulations requires periodic updates to course content. Any changes Shaw E&I makes to the web-based course are seen by the very next student.

The web-based version of the OSHA course has eliminated the costs of trainer travel and the disruptions to employee schedules for the required annual refresher course. In addition, non-employees can pay a fee to take the course, which offsets the company’s expenses for online maintenance and development.
