The Learning & Performance Solutions (LPS) Group has partnered with the UCSD division of Staff Education and Development in the production of web-based tutorials for staff members and students who interface with campus financial systems.
The UCSD Staff Education Department provides training for a large audience of students and faculty with a limited staff of instructors. In order to support UCSD’s growing training needs and goals, LPS has been assisting the Staff Education department with the conversion of many of their instructor-led training courses.
All web-based training is hosted on UCSD’s Learning Management System and most of the courses have been developed by LPS in partnership with the UCSD Staff and Education department. In most cases, we provide the graphic development and programming and the UCSD staff provides the instructional design and maintenance (updates).
The web-based courses are comprised of appropriate combinations of text, graphics, and interactive "show me" and "you try it" software simulations that replicate UCSD’s financial accounting system. Multiple choice questions and other standard testing techniques query the learner and return immediate feedback for each interaction. Each web-based training course includes a final assessment that is scored, tracked, and required for the learner to become certified.

As a partner of UCSD, LPS provides ongoing support for new training requirements and updates. Developed courses include Basic Computer Security, Cash Control Training, Travel at UCSD, Express Card Cardholder Orientation, Computer Ergonomics, Payment Authorization, Disbursements, PPS Online Authorization, Hazardous Material Training for Laboratory Personnel and Shop Personnel, and Stem Cell Research Ethics.
To date, over 1,500 users have become certified through the Express Card online tutorial. User surveys conducted by UCSD have shown that learners prefer web-based training to instructor-led training. In addition, the Computer Security course developed for UCSD has been converted for the use of the Office of the President for the entire UC system. The Computer Security course is being used with great success by other universities in the UC system.
